Indian monitor lizard

Monitor Lizard bears a striking appearance with elongated head, usually long neck and tail, and snake-like tongue. All the thirty existing species are so similar that they are included in a single genus Varanus, in a range from Africa, throughout Southeast Asia to Australia. Monitor Lizard is world`s heaviest and largest lizard. The Komodo dragon of Indonesia grows to a length of over three metres and may weigh two hundred kilograms.

Despite the massive body, Monitor Lizard is surprisingly a good runner and swimmer. The smaller one is excellent climber. The long, forked tongue is employed as a sensory organ. They hiss loudly in defence and lash with their powerful tails. They are all carnivorous and feed on a wide variety of prey including insects, crabs, molluscs, rodents, birds and carrion. They are particularly fond of eggs, in search of which they may raid bird, turtle and powerful teeth and jaws and swallowed whole or in large chunks. The female lays about fifteen to thirty eggs and deposits them in termite moulds, holes in the ground, hollow logs or piles of brush. Though the eggs of the common monitor may hatch in two months, water monitor eggs may incubate for nine months.

The Compound Eye

The type of eye commonly found in arthropods, including many insects and crustaceans. A compound eye has a mesh like appearance because it consists of hundreds or thousands of tiny lens-capped optical units called ommatidia. Each ommatidium has its own cornea, lens, and photoreceptor cells for distinguishing brightness and color. Individual ommatidia guide light through a lens and cone into a channel, known as a rhabdom, which contains light-sensitive cells. These are connected to optical nerve cells to produce the image. The ommatidia are separated from each other by varying degrees of pigment.

The ommatidia are packed side by side into bulges that create a wide field of view. As each unit is orientated in a slightly different direction, the honeycombed eye creates a mosaic image which, although poor at picking out detail, is excellent at detecting movement.

The forest bug, Pentatoma rufipes, is a species of shield bug in the family Pentatomidae. It is a common and widespread species found in forests and woodlands worldwide. It is shiny dark brown with red-orange markings on its body and bright orange legs. It is shaped like an escutcheon-type shield, flat, and about 14 millimetres (0.55 in) long. Its distinguishing characteristic is a pair of plates extending forward from the shoulders at the front of its dorsal thorax.
The forest bug's main food source is any of several species of oak. It is a sap-feeder and uses piercing mouthparts to withdraw the liquid. It can also be found on other species of deciduous trees. The forest bug is also an agricultural and garden pest, as it will not hesitate to feed on fruit and nut trees. Occasionally it will consume other insects.
Adults lay eggs during the summer in the cracks of tree bark, and the larvae hatch the following spring.

The Green vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta), is a slender green tree snake found in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

The green vine snake is diurnal and mildly venomous. The reptile normally feeds on frogs and lizards using its binocular vision to hunt. They are slow moving, relying on camouflaging as a vine in foliage. The snake expands its body when disturbed to show a black and white scale marking. Also, they may open their mouth in threat display and point their head in the direction of the perceived threat.

New Discovery - Water in moon !!!

This was the headline which hit the news stand just few days back. It started off with Chandrayaan's mission to moon. Even though the mission was a failure, it brought the good news that there is scope for life in moon as there were trace of glaciers.

This discovery indeed deserves appreciation. Not only to the scientists who were toiling hard but also to each and every person who put their heart and soul to tried to make this mission a success. Hats off to each and everyone for this discovery which would bring a glimpse of good fortune to mankind whose future otherwise looks bleak what with Global warming and such.

While talking about the Global Warming we should think what we have done from our end to contribute to it.

1.    Did we stop to think what are we doing to this earth?
2.    Did we use less paper so that we can preserve our forests?
3.    Did we stop buying new and luxurious vehicles there by contributing to environment pollution?
4.    And most importantly “DID WE SAVE OUR WATER BODIES FROM POLLUTION”?

Lets’ take an example of our own garden City Bangalore. This city boasted off about having more than 280 lakes in late 60’s. Yeah..You read it right…it was 280 something lakes in and around of Bangalore.

Among these if you could find even one now (unpolluted) ,then you should get your eyes tested .This City, otherwise Nicknamed as Silicon valley of east, the IT boom brought in jobs, then homes and then water pollution.

Now these lakes are nothing but enhanced septic tanks. We were not able to save even one lake among this 280.

Let us take another common example of our HOLY GANGA. This river’s holiness was in its ability to cure great many diseases since the river washes through the valleys of Himalayas which houses several un-discovered medicinal plants.

The holy Ganga is no more Holy…We pollute it in the name of religion. Now Ganga ‘s water does not have medicinal powers instead it carries half burned human remains and other industrial waste. Reason? Burial near Ganga is sacred and holy but polluting it is not !!!!!
Hence do you really think that we would need to contribute a Global Warming in MOON? We don’t think so.

Let the discovery of water in Moon or other planets remain as a mystery as always. It would bring more harm to this universe than anything else.At least let those planets be safe from our pollution.

Honnemaradu (a place of golden sand) is a tourist place situated on the back waters of River Sharavathi. It is popular among watersports enthusiasts as a site for kayaking, windsurfing and other similar sports.

It is located in Shimoga district, Karnataka about 25 km away from Sagara, on the way to Jog falls. Visitors can stay overnight, with facilities for food, shelter and equipment rentals nearby.

Honnemardu is full of adventurer’s delight and offers a wide range of activities for everyone from the school children to the young at heart 60 year olds. Honnemardu is a small village perched on the hills that overlook the Linganamakki Reservoir. The reservoir is also known as Honnemardu after the village. In the middle of this huge water body there is a small island that attracts the campers. In addition to the various adventure activities, Honnemardu is also a birdwatchers paradise and one can spend endless hours watching and trying to identify the large variety of birds and butterflies.

Honnemaradu, a haven for water sports, is tucked away in the lush greenery of the Western Ghats along the Sharavati backwaters near Sagar. Encompassing an area of 50 km by 80 km, this reservoir stretches as far as the eye can see. One of the few places that cater exclusively to water sports, Honnemaradu or “Golden Lake” has some of the most spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset.

Deep in a forest, without the slightest trace of civilisation, Honnemaradu is a haven for die-hard outdoors fanatics as well as those who want a complete break from the City.

Glory Lily

Common name: Glory Lily, Gloriosa lily, Tiger claw, claw

Botanical name: Gloriosa superba

Family: Liliaceae (Lily family)

Synonyms: Gloriosa rothschildiana, Gloriosa speciosa, Gloriosa simplex

Glory Lily is a most unusual and splendid flower, which is a sight to behold. In bud, the pale green petals face downward. As the blossom matures, the petals elongate and wrinkle and gradually arch backward while sequencing through a spectrum of color from green to yellow to scarlet. The stamens are extremely prominent and spread outward in graceful curves that follow the petals in their backward progression. The flower is 3-5 in in length. Glory Lily is a twining vine that is able to climb up with tendrils formed at the tips of the leaves. Leaves are bright green and lance shape, 2-3 in. long. The leaf tip elongates into a slender tendril that coils around nearby supports to get a grip. A postal stamp was issued by the Indian Postal Department to commemorate this flower.

The Passion Flower (Passiflora), a fast-growing perennial vine, with showy white and purple-blue scented flowers. Passion flower is tropical flower, native to southern Brazil and Argentina. It is also widely found from Virginia to southern Illinois and southeast Kansas, south to Florida and Texas in USA.

Passion flower is also known by other common names viz., Passion Vine, Maracuja, Apricot Vine, Maypop, etc. Passion Flower is 10 cm wide, with the five sepals and petals. The corona in the flower is blue or with violet filaments. Passion flowers have five greenish-yellow stamens and three purple stigmas.

Passion flowers are known to have have a high medicinal value. Passion flower has a tranquilizing effect, including mild sedative and anti-anxiety effects. The sedative effect of Passion flower has made it popular for treating a variety of ailments, including nervousness and insomnia.

Opadometa fastigata (Simon, 1877)

Size: 7-9 mm.
Distribution: India, Philippines.
Habitat: Low shrubs in shaded and moist environments.
These are orb web builders in shaded vegetation. The cephalothorax is flat which is pale yellow, darkens medially and towards the margin. Pedicel joins the abdomen some distance along the ventral side. Front of the abdomen of the female tapers strongly and overhangs most of the carapace. The abdomen is tubular, tapers to the front and protrudes to the rear over the spinnerets. There are silver white patches all over the abdomen. The legs are long and thin with dark brown annulations. Femora IV with uniform rakes of long curved trichobothria. There is also a substantial brush of hairs all round or almost all along tibia IV.
